PHARMACOLOGY OF CANNABIS
While Cannabis is one of the best-studied plants with over 500 known constituents found to date, many have not been characterized for their specific biological activity. Of these constituents there are a group of chemical compounds unique to the cannabis plant called cannabinoids.
Cannabinoids are unique structures found only in the cannabis plant. While there are more than 60 cannabinoids identified so far, there most commonly known of these are: THC and CBG.
Delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol (THC)
THC is the compound responsible for the intoxicating or psychotropic effect. As a result, THC is often referred to as the active constituent of cannabis. But, THC has been found to have many therapeutic applications such as treatment of appetite loss, chronic pain, insomnia, depression and nausea.
While TCH is a highly active compound it is important to remember that plant pharmacology is complex and with more than 60 cannabinoids identified to date, there are several other compounds with highly active applications.
CBD is a non-psychoactive component of marijuana that produces a wide range of therapeutic effects. When found in larger quantities, CBD has been shown to enhance the positive effects of THC wile negating many of the negative ones.
STRAINS OF CANNABIS
There are many different strains of cannabis, each producing different spectrums and ratios of the active chemical constituents. Some constituents are found only in certain strains, while others constituents are present in a many different strains but in varying amounts. This diversity causes a huge variance in the medicinal properties found in any given cannabis strain.
As a result, Medican is highly invested in research and development to cultivate specific strains of cannabis with varying profiles of active cannabinoids. Medican will focus on cultivating 5 strains of Cannabis with standardized potencies and verified purity:
- High THC / Low CBD
- Medium THC / Low CBD
- Medium THC / Medium CBD
- Low TCH / High CBD
